Peavy looks to play stopper for Padres
Jun 13, 2007 - 1:38 PM San Diego (36-27) at Tampa Bay (29-33) 7:10 pm EDTST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- Jake Peavy takes the mound on Wednesday when the San Diego Padres attempt to snap a four-game losing streak against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
San Diego's ace has had some struggles of his own lately, failing to record a decision in his last two starts while allowing seven runs and 17 hits over 13 2/3 combined innings.
Peavy (7-1, 1.97 ERA) still ranks first in the National league in ERA and is second in strikeouts, one behind Cole Hamels (96).
Peavy's struggles look miniscule compared to the Devil Rays' starter, Edwin Jackson (0-7, 7.39). The 23-year-old has yet to earn a win this season and has had just one start in which he allowed less than three earned runs.
Jackson made three appearances - one start - against San Diego while with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The righthander allowed four runs in nine total innings against the Padres.
Tampa Bay won the first game of the series with an 11-run onslaught led by resurgent first baseman Carlos Pena, who clubbed his team-leading 14th homer - a grand slam - in the eighth inning of an 11-4 drubbing.
