Dodgers target series sweep of Mets

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Brad Penny looks to overcome the team that has haunted him the most throughout his career as the Los Angeles Dodgers eye a three-game sweep of the New York Mets at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday.

Penny (7-1, 2.26 ERA) has struggled mightily against the Mets, as he is 3-10 with a 6.16 ERA in 16 starts. Those are his most losses against any team and his highest ERA against a club he has faced more than twice.

However, the starting pitcher for the National League in the All-Star Game last season has been sharp for most of this campaign. In nine of his 13 starts, Penny has held the opposition to one run or less and, as a result, the righthander owns the second-best ERA in the NL.

With a victory in the series finale, Penny will join teammate Randy Wolf and the Phillies' Cole Hamels for the NL lead in wins with eight. In Friday's 4-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays, the 28-year-old yielded one run and five hits with seven strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings.

Looking to help the Mets find the winning form that they have shown for much of the season, Jorge Sosa (6-1, 2.64) will target his fourth consecutive win. In winning six of his seven starts this season, he has limited opposing hitters to a .187 batting average.

Sosa is coming off a 3-0 victory at the Detroit Tigers on Friday, yielding four hits and striking out five in eight innings.

The righthander has been one of the few shining lights during New York's 2-9 start to June, capturing both wins. This will be Sosa's sixth career appearance against the Dodgers, going 0-0 with a 3.48 ERA in the previous five, including a start.
