Ohlendorf, Padres close out set with Rockies
Jul 22, 2012 - 2:25 PMVideo
A native of Austin who'll turn 30 next month, Ohlendorf signed a free-agent deal with the Padres in June after spending the last three seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
He was released by the Pirates in December and spent minor-league time with the Boson Red Sox in the spring before being granted free agency and signing with San Diego.
He's made three starts in seven appearances with his new team and improved to 3-0 on July 17 when he tossed six innings of six-hit, two-run ball in an 8-2 defeat of Houston.
In 23 composite innings, Ohlendorf has surrendered 32 hits and 15 earned runs while allowing opposing batters to compile a .327 average.
He's 1-1 in five career starts against the Rockies, who'll send rookie lefty Christian Friedrich out for his 15th overall start and third against the Padres.
The 25-year-old has pitched 11 innings of three-run ball in the previous two assignments, winning the lone decision and walking one batter while striking out 12.
He tossed five innings while getting a no-decision and allowing one run on five hits in the most recent matchup on June 30.
In three starts since, Friedlich is 1-2 and has allowed 16 hits and 12 runs in 15 innings.
He's 3-3 in seven road games in 2012.
In Saturday's second game, Jordan Pacheco drove in the winning run in the 12th inning as the Rockies dropped the Padres, 8-6.
Pacheco picked up three hits on the night and drove in four runs for Colorado, which snapped a three-game losing streak.
"That was a well played baseball game on both sides of the field," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said. "We did a nice job of coming back offensively."
Josh Rutledge, who was called up following the All-Star break, picked up two hits and drove in a run. The 23-year-old shortstop has picked up multiple hits in four of his first eight games in the big leagues.
Joe Thatcher (0-3) took the loss after surrendering a pair of runs on three hits in the 12th inning.
Chase Headley knocked in a pair of runs as the Padres saw their four-game winning streak come to an end.
"One of those games," Padres manager Bud Black said. "A lot of close calls on both sides."
The Padres won five of the first eight games between the teams this season, taking two of three in series in May and June after Colorado won two of three in April.
The teams split 18 games in 2011.
