Quintana, ChiSox battle Twins

Jul 24, 2012 - 2:57 PM (Sports Network) - Colombian-born southpaw Jose Quintana can stay unbeaten since early June tonight when the Chicago White Sox entertain the Minnesota Twins in the second game of their three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field.

A 23-year-old in his initial big-league season, Quintana has started 10 times in 12 overall appearances and hasn't been beaten since dropping a 4-0 decision to the Toronto Blue Jays on June 6.

He's 3-0 in seven starts since and the White Sox are 6-2 in those games, in which Quintana has pitched eight innings four times and allowed one run or fewer five times.

In 70 1/3 overall innings, he's given up 59 hits, walked 13 batters and struck out 43.

Quintana has never faced the Twins.

The White Sox took a lead in the series on Monday, when Paul Konerko, Adam Dunn and Alex Rios all homered in a 7-4 triumph that ended a five-game losing streak.

Chicago moved back within a game of first-place Detroit in the American League's Central Division. The Tigers took the lead when they swept the White Sox over the weekend.

Starter Gavin Floyd (8-8) overcame control problems to earn the win. Floyd surrendered three runs - two earned - on six hits and six walks, while only striking out one after being activated from the disabled list prior to the game.

Minnesota's Francisco Liriano (3-10), who struck out 25 over his two previous starts, only lasted 2 2/3 innings as he lost his third straight start. He was shelled for seven runs on seven hits and a walk.

Ryan Doumit hit his third home run in two days for the Twins, who have dropped seven of 11 since the All-Star break.

Minnesota starts game two with rookie righty Cole De Vries, who's split four decisions in his initial eight major-league appearances.

The 27-year-old Minnesota native debuted on May 24 in Chicago and dropped an 11-8 decision to the White Sox after allowing six runs on six hits in five innings.

He won two straight starts against Kansas City in June while allowing 11 hits and six runs across 11 innings, but is winless in four outings since - including a loss to Oakland and a no-decision against Baltimore since the All- Star break.

Minnesota is 3-5 in games he's pitched.

Chicago has won two of three games in a pair of 2012 series against the Twins - the first in Chicago in May and the second in Minnesota in June.

The teams split 18 games last season.
