A's pound Blue Jays for 7th straight win

Jul 26, 2012 - 5:56 AM Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Coco Crisp hit a pair of solo homers and scored three times and Yoenis Cespedes hit a pair of doubles and drove in a two, as the Oakland Athletics hammered the Toronto Blue Jays, 16-0, in the middle tilt of a three-game set at Rogers Centre.

Chris Carter homered and drove in three, Brandon Inge had a pair of RBI while Jonny Gomes, Josh Reddick and Derek Norris each knocked in a run for the A's, who have won a season-high seven in a row. It is the club's longest winning streak since it rattled off seven straight wins Sept. 14-20 2009.

A.J. Griffin (3-0) tossed six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and walked two while fanning a career-high nine batters, helping the A's move to 16-2 this month.

"We're winning games now the way we were losing games in the first half," Gomes said. "Teams were taking advantage of our mistakes, our errors."

Edwin Encarnacion and Anthony Gose both doubled for the Blue Jays, losers in six of 11 since the All-Star break.

Ricky Romero (8-7) was pegged with the loss after giving up eight runs on four hits and six walks in just 1 1/3 innings of work.

"For me to come out and have that kind of performance is tough," Romero said. "It was a complete embarrassment."

Blue Jays catcher J.P. Arencibia suffered a fractured right hand and is expected to miss up to six weeks. The 26-year-old took a foul tip off his throwing hand in the second inning.

Oakland wasted no time and took the lead in the first. Gomes walked then scored when Cespedes doubled off the wall in left-center.

The A's broke the game open with an eight-run second. Norris and Jemile Weeks walked to put runners at first and second for Crisp, who delivered an RBI single to left. Gomes followed with a base hit to plate Weeks before Reddick ripped a double to push Crisp across the plate.

With runners on second and third, Romero intentionally walked Cespedes to load the bases. Romero then walked Carter to force in Gomes, cueing the end of his night. Inge welcomed Chad Beck with a double to left that plated Cespedes and Reddick, and Norris followed with a single to push Carter across. A groundout from Brandon Hicks scored Inge to cap the big rally.

Reddick made a sparkling defensive play to cap the second inning, taking an extra base hit away from Travis Snider. In Spiderman-like mode, Reddick used one hand to grab the wall in right and his other to make the catch.

"I thought it was a home run," Griffin said. "It was a weird play. If he would have given a little bit more reaction, I would have been a little more excited. I was just relieved."

Crisp hit a pair of solo homers in both the third and fifth and Carter's solo shot in the sixth made it 12-0 Oakland.

The A's added two more in both the eighth and ninth. Cespedes doubled to right to drive in Seth Smith in the eighth before scoring on a Carter groundout.

Hicks and pinch-hitter Brandon Moss drove in runs in the ninth.
