Young starters battle in Padres-Devil Rays finale
Jun 14, 2007 - 12:47 PM San Diego (37-27) at Tampa Bay (29-34) 12:10 pm EDTST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are always searching for quality pitching. The San Diego Padres are one of the few teams with a wealth of quality arms.
A pair of young starters are set to battle when the Devil Rays host the Padres in the rubber game of their three-game series on Thursday.
The surprising Justin Germano (4-0, 2.75 ERA) will get the start for San Diego. The Padres picked up the 24-year-old in spring training after he was released by the Philadelphia Phillies and inserted him into the rotation on May 8.
The righthander allowed three earned runs or less in each of his first five starts before running into trouble last Friday in his first matchup with an American League opponent. Germano allowed five runs in five innings against the Seattle Mariners on Friday, but did not factor into the decision.
Tampa Bay will counter with J.P. Howell (1-0, 4.85). The 24-year-old lefthander was recalled from Class AAA Durham for a start against the Royals on June 3.
After dominating Kansas City to earn his first win of the season, Howell got knocked around by the Florida Marlins on Friday, surrendering six runs and eight hits in five innings.
After pounding the Padres, 11-4, on Monday, Jake Peavy stymied the Devil Rays in a 9-0 loss.
Peavy yielded two hits over seven innings as San Diego snapped a four-game losing streak.
