Stanford gets first big-league start since 2004 vs. Marlins

Jun 14, 2007 - 1:21 PM Cleveland (38-26) at Florida (32-34) 7:05 pm EDT

MIAMI (Ticker) - The Cleveland Indians have one of the best records in baseball, but the back of their rotation is still in question.

Mark Stanford will get a chance to claim the No. 5 spot when the Indians visit the Florida Marlins in the rubber game of their three-game interleague series on Thursday.

Cleveland has suffered pitching injuries to Jake Westbrook and Cliff Lee early this season and second-year man Jeremy Sowers was ineffective enough to be optioned back to Class AAA Buffalo. Instead of rushing top prospects Adam Miller and Chuck Lofgren to the majors, the Indians are giving a second chance to a former prospect.

Stanford (NR) has not pitched in the major leagues since April 2004, due to reconstructive surgery on his left elbow. The 30-year-old lefthander made 15 appearances for Cleveland in 2003 and 2004 before the injuries.

At Buffalo this season, Stanford compiled a 4-1 record with 3.41 ERA in 12 games - 11 starts.

Taking their hacks at Stanford will be a Marlins lineup that has not scored more than four runs in their last four games, going 1-3 over that stretch.

Florida will hand the ball to Dontrelle Willis (7-5, 4.74 ERA). The 25-year-old lefthander has suffered losses in each of his last two starts, combining to walk 10 batters.
