Final/11
A's pitching keeps them in the race
Jun 14, 2007 - 1:28 PM Oakland (35-29) at Houston (27-38) 2:05 pm EDTHOUSTON (Ticker) -- The Oakland Athletics have won nine of 12 games this season on the strength of a pitching staff that allowed more than four runs just once.
Chad Gaudin will try to keep the strong performances going when the A's conclude their three-game interleague series with the Houston Astros on Thursday.
Gaudin (6-1, 2.43 ERA) has been perhaps the biggest surprise for Oakland this season. The 24-year-old righthander pitched exclusively out of the bullpen for the A's last season, but was thrust into the rotation this year due to the injuries to Rich Harden and Esteban Loiaza.
Gaudin has allowed more than two earned runs in just two of his 13 starts this season. He limited the San Francisco Giants to two runs over 6 2/3 innings but did not factor in a 5-3 win on Friday.
The Astros will counter with Jason Jennings (0-1, 2.70). Since coming off the disabled list on May 29, Jennings has allowed five earned runs in 18 innings over three starts but did not pick up any decisions.
While Carlos Lee has drawn most of the headlines, Jennings' arrival in Houston in the offseason was just as important to the club. The righthander was expected to fill the big shoes of Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte, but he has yet to earn a win in five starts.
The Astros have dropped three of their last four games, managing three runs or less in each loss.
