Mariners look to remain hot against Cubs

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Seattle Mariners look to continue their recent stretch of success when they visit the Chicago Cubs on Thursday.

The Mariners did have a five-game winning streak end with a 3-2 loss on Wednesday. However, Seattle remain one of baseball's hottest teams, having won nine of 11 and 16 of their last 22 games.

Seattle will start Jeff Weaver (0-6, 12.46 ERA), who has been bothered by a sore lower back recently. The 6-5 righthander was limited to four innings in his last outing on Saturday, allowing one run and two hits in a 6-5 loss to the San Diego Padres.

Jason Marquis (5-3, 3.01) takes the mound for the Cubs, who are 13-18 at Wrigley Field this season. After winning five consecutive starts from April 16-May 9, the righthander has gone six consecutive outings without a win.

Mike Fontenot keyed the Cubs' win Wednesday with a two-run single in the fifth inning. In seven games this season, he is batting .429 (9-for-21) with a homer and five RBI.

Seattle closer J.J. Putz is 19-for-19 in save opportunities this season, which is the longest active save streak in the major leagues.
