Holliday Card: St. Louis resumes set with Rockies

Aug 1, 2012 - 2:33 PM (Sports Network) - Matt Holliday hopes to continue to haunt his old team when the world champion St. Louis Cardinals continue a three-game set with the lowly Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

Holliday and Carlos Beltran each hit two-run homers on Tuesday while David Freese added a solo shot as the Cardinals hammered Colorado, 11-6, in the opener of the series.

Holliday, who spent his first five seasons with the Rockies and helped the franchise reach its only World Series in 2007, also hit a two-run double and finished with four RBI for the Cardinals, who snapped a two-game slide and are seven games in back of Cincinnati in the NL Central.

Holliday is now hitting a sizzling .368 with six homers and 18 RBI against the Rockies since being traded to Oakland after the 2008 season.

"It's always good to drive in some runs and give the team my two cents. It was a good night to hit," said Holliday.

Kyle Lohse (11-2) got the win for St. Louis despite surrendering five runs on nine hits and two walks through six innings. He has now won five straight decisions.

Jeff Francis (3-3) allowed five runs on six hits and no walks over four innings to take the loss for Colorado, which has dropped 12 of its last 15.

Josh Rutledge hit a three-run home run in defeat.

Righty Jake Westbrook takes the hill for the Cards on Wednesday and has never lost to Colorado, compiling a 3-0 mark with a 2.18 ERA in four games (three starts).

The veteran has been pitching well recently, reaching at least the seventh inning in his last four starts, including last Thursday when he scattered seven hits and allowed four runs -- three earned -- in a 7-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"Each guy on their day takes pride in going out there and doing their job," Westbrook told the Cardinals' website. "Our starting pitchers, our goal is to get deep into the game, give our team a chance to win."

Opposing Westbrook will be rookie left-hander Drew Pomeranz, who has been largely ineffective this season, especially lately. Pomeranz, who has never faced St. Louis, is 0-3 since the All-Star break with a dismal 10.13 ERA. He's also winless at Coors Field, compiling an 0-4 mark at home.

Off the field the Cardinals attempted to fortify their bullpen for the stretch run at the trade deadline on Tuesday, acquiring right-hander Edward Mujica from Miami.

The Cardinals have won four of five games with the Rockies so far this season and have taken 12 of 15 overall in the series.
