Greinke, Angels kick off set with ChiSox

Aug 3, 2012 - 2:49 PM (Sports Network) - Zack Greinke makes his second start for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim this evening, as they begin a three-game set with the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

Greinke, acquired last Friday from Milwaukee, received a hard-luck loss in his Angels' debut on Sunday against Tampa Bay. The former AL Cy Young Award winner gave up two runs and seven hits in that one and struck out eight, but the Angels couldn't cross the plate in the 2-0 setback.

"He was awesome," catcher Chris Iannetta said afterward. "He barely had any mistakes. His stuff is electric, and it speaks for itself."

Despite a few solid outings, Greinke finished the month of July 0-2 with a 5.46 ERA over six starts.

Greinke tossed a three-hit shutout to beat the White Sox earlier in the year and is 7-10 lifetime against them with a 3.98 ERA in 25 games (22 starts).

"Hopefully I'll win a bunch of games and it becomes a fun season," Greinke said. "Everything's just happened pretty fast - traveling here, meeting a bunch of new people, going over things with the catcher and having a day game instead of a night game, which would have made it easier to get adjusted. So a lot of stuff was going on. But once you get on the mound, it's the same game no matter where you're pitching and who it's against."

Greinke will be trying to get the Angels back on track after losing the final two games of their four-game set with the Texas Rangers. After losing a wild 11-10 extra-inning affair on Wednesday, Los Angeles dropped another slugfest on Thursday, this time falling 15-9.

Mark Trumbo, Kendrys Morales and Alberto Callaspo each homered in the setback, as the Angels fell five games back of the Rangers atop the AL West.

"There were a ton of positives to take away from this (series) overall," said Trumbo. "Not exactly what we wanted, but I think we made a pretty good impression."

Chicago, meanwhile, returns home for 10 straight games after finishing up a grueling stretch that saw it play 16 of 19 away from home.

The White Sox, though, still sit on top of the AL Central standings and enter tonight's tilt following a series win over Minnesota. In Wednesday's rubber match, Alejandro De Aza drove home the game-winner in the eighth inning to help the White Sox get past the Twins, 3-2.

De Aza finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Tyler Flowers was 2- for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the White Sox, who took the last two games of the set after dropping the opener. Adam Dunn drove in the other run.

Jake Peavy (9-7) won his second straight start as he gave up two runs -- one earned -- on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts over eight innings.

"This is a nice way to go into an off day because we have some big games coming up," said Peavy. "I felt pretty good out there today and hopefully can carry it through on my next start."

Tonight, Philip Humber gets the call, as he goes for a fourth win in five starts. Humber beat the Rangers on Saturday, holding them to a run and four hits in six innings to run his record to 5-5, while lowering his ERA to 5.90.

Humber is 0-1 in two games (1 start) against the Halos with a 2.57 ERA.

The Angels took six of eight meetings between these teams last season, but they split a two-game series in Anaheim earlier in the year.
