Halladay looks for some stability in up and down season

Jun 15, 2007 - 2:35 PM Washington (29-37) at Toronto (31-34) 7:07 pm EDT

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Roy Halladay is the undisputed ace of the Toronto Blue Jays. The problem is, he only pitches like it once every few starts.

Halladay will look to rebound from a pair of sub-par performances when the Blue Jays host the Washington Nationals on Friday in the opener of a three-game interleague series.

The veteran righthander had the worst two-start stretch of his career on May 5 and May 10, when he allowed 17 runs in 10 1/3 innings to the Rangers and Red Sox. The next day he went to the hospital and had his appendix removed.

The club thought all was well when he came off the disabled list just 21 days later and tossed seven scoreless innings against the White Sox, but two more less-than-stellar starts followed. Now there are legitimate questions about Halladay's effectiveness.

Halladay (6-2, 4.56 ERA) will be facing a team with the 28th-beat batting average in the majors, but the Nationals have been swinging the bats well lately. They scored 19 runs in a three-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles this week.

Washington will hand the ball to Mike Bacsik (1-3, 4.34). The 29-year-old lefthander has lost his last three starts.

In his only other interleague start this season, Bacsik yielded four runs - three earned - and nine hits in five innings to take a loss last Sunday at Minnesota.
