Hernandez takes mound against Astros
Jun 15, 2007 - 2:43 PM Seattle (35-28) at Houston (27-39) 8:05 pm EDTHOUSTON (Ticker) -- Felix Hernandez will be asked to help the Seattle Mariners avoid a three-game losing streak when they face the Houston Astros in the opener of an interleague series on Friday.
The Mariners did put together five consecutive wins before dropping two straight one-run games to the Chicago Cubs. Leading 4-3 in the eighth inning on Thursday, rookie reliever Brandon Morrow gave up a two-run double to Cesar Izturis as Seattle dropped a 5-4 decision.
Hernandez (3-3, 4.41 ERA) has struggled since returning from the disabled list on May 15. The 21-year-old righthander has surrendered 21 runs despite posting 35 strikeouts in 31 2/3 innings over his previous six starts.
Hernandez did not receive a decision in his last start, pitching six innings and giving up three runs and seven hits with six strikeouts in a 4-3 triumph over the San Diego Padres on Sunday.
Wandy Rodriguez (3-6, 4.52) will take the mound for the Astros, who have lost four of their last five contests.
Rodriguez pitched five innings, yielding five runs - four earned - and seven hits with three strikeouts in a 6-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.
Houston dropped a 6-5 decision to the Oakland Athletics on Thursday after Jason Kendall hit an RBI single off Brian Moehler in the 11th inning.
