Royals, Marlins open three-game interleague series

Jun 15, 2007 - 3:11 PM Florida (32-35) at Kansas City (26-41) 8:10 pm EDT

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- The Kansas City Royals bring their newfound offensive power to the field when they host the Florida Marlins in the opener of a weekend interleague series.

The Royals are coming of a 17-8 thrashing over the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday. Kansas City has won three of its last four, outscoring opponents 45-16.

Gil Meche (3-6, 3.16 ERA) takes the ball after losing his past five starts for the Royals. The righthander allowed four runs with a season-high eight strikeouts in a 4-0 setback to Philadelphia.

Meche has been a victim of poor run support during his slide, getting just eight total runs in his last four outings.

Florida's Sergio Mitre (2-2, 1.59) goes in search of his first win in three starts. Despite three straight no-decisions, Mitre has not surrendered an earned run in any of those games - a span of 23 2/3 innings.

The Marlins have dropped back-to-back contests for the first time this month, including Thursday's series finale against the Cleveland Indians.
