Shields looks to keep rolling against red-hot Rockies
Jun 15, 2007 - 3:20 PM Tampa Bay (29-35) at Colorado (33-33) 9:05 pm EDTDENVER (Ticker) -- James Shields will put his perfect record on the line Friday when the Tampa Bay Devil Rays visit the Colorado Rockies for the start of a three-game interleague series.
Shields (6-0, 3.04 ERA) has been one of the bright spots for the Devil Rays this season, emerging as one of the top pitchers in the American League. At 25-years-old, Shields is looking like the pitcher Tampa Bay needs to anchor its staff while phenom Scott Kazmir continues to work through some growing pains.
Shields has won three starts in a row, without allowing more than three runs or more than one walk in that span. The righthander's improved control, along with the continued development of a curveball to go along with his killer changeup has been at the root of his success this season.
The Rockies will not be fooled on Friday. Over the past two days, Colorado hitters have pounded Boston co-aces Curt Schilling and Josh Beckett for six runs each.
Thursday's 7-1 win gave the Rockies their fourth straight series victory, and pulled their record up to .500 for the first time since they were 5-5 on April 13.
Colorado will send veteran Rodrigo Lopez (2-0, 2.88) to the mound. The 31-year-old righthander has been a surprising success as a free-agent signee this season.
Lopez has yet to allow more than three earned runs in a start, and is coming off an outing last Saturday in which he held his former team - the Baltimore Orioles - to two runs in seven innings. He did not factor in the decision as the Rockies went on to win 3-2.
In his five seasons in the AL East, Rodriguez built up a 10-6 mark with a 4.37 ERA in 19 games - 14 starts - against Tampa Bay.
