Orioles target sweep of Mariners

Baltimore extended its streak in thrilling fashion on Tuesday, as J.J. Hardy hit a game-tying, three-run home run in the seventh inning and Adam Jones slapped a game-winning single in the 14th, propelling the O's to an 8-7 victory.
Matt Wieters had a pair of solo home runs for the Orioles, who rallied from a five-run deficit and won their 12th straight extra-inning game. Darren O'Day (6-0) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.
"We're glad we got the game. It was an extra-inning game and everybody wanted to get out of here," Jones said. "We kept fighting."
Kyle Seager smacked a three-run homer in defeat for Seattle, which has lost four of its last five games.
After Seattle left a man on second in the 12th and 13th innings, the Orioles, who managed just one baserunner since the eighth inning, scored the game- winning run in the 14th thanks to a questionable call by first base umpire Brian Knight.
Omar Quintanilla opened the inning with a grounder up the middle off Shawn Kelley (2-3) that second baseman Dustin Ackley stopped with a diving effort and threw to first. The ball arrived to first well in front of Quintanilla, but Mike Carp had to stretch for the ball and Knight said Carp's foot was not on the bag.
Mariners manager Eric Wedge came out to argue the call and was ejected from the game.
Nick Markakis followed with a soft liner to left-center field for a base hit before Hardy's sacrifice bunt placed runners on second and third. Chris Davis was then intentionally walked to load the bases.
Jones followed with a sinking liner to right field that Casper Wells had skip underneath his glove for the game-deciding hit.
"A game shouldn't end like that when you're in the 14th inning," said Wedge. "For an umpire to get involved in that is just ridiculous."
Getting the call for the O's tonight will be righty Steve Johnson, who will be making his first big league start. Johnson made his big league debut in relief for Baltimore back on July 15 and allowed a run in two innings of work.
Johnson has appeared in 19 games -- 14 of them starts -- at Triple-A Norfolk this year, going 4-8 with a 2.86 ERA.
Seattle, meanwhile, will counter with veteran Kevin Millwood, who has lost five of his last six decisions. Millwood's latest loss came on Friday against the New York Yankees, as he allowed four runs and nine hits in six innings to fall to 4-9 on the year to go along with a 4.01 ERA.
"I thought I located my fastball pretty well and threw some good changeups," Millwood said. "My curveball stunk, but my slider was OK, a little inconsistent. All in all, I had enough to compete and possibly win a game."
Millwood, who lost 16 games as a member of the Orioles in 2010, is 9-3 lifetime versus Baltimore with a 3.74 ERA in 13 games.
Baltimore swept a three-game set from the M's at Camden Yards last season.
