Reyes extends hit streak to 26, Marlins rout Mets

Aug 9, 2012 - 3:52 AM Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Jose Reyes accomplished plenty during his nine-year tenure with the New York Mets, though he arguably never had a better stretch than the one he's currently on in his first year with the Marlins.

Reyes extended his hitting streak to a career-high 26 games with a solo home run in his first at-bat Wednesday, while Giancarlo Stanton added a pair of two-run blasts in Miami's 13-0 drubbing of New York.

The 26-game streak, the longest in the majors this season, comes on the heels of Reyes batting .264 in the first half. Since the All-Star break, the four- time All-Star has hit .365 (38-of-104) with five home runs.

"I'm just trying to be me. I'm not thinking too much about [the streak], just trying to play my game," Reyes said.

Stanton went 4-for-5 one day after being activated from the 15-day disabled list. He followed Reyes' second-deck shot in the first inning with a two-run homer later in the frame, then made it 7-0 with a screaming line drive over the left-field wall in the fifth after Carlos Lee's two-run base hit.

Bryan Petersen added a three-run triple and scored on a Justin Ruggiano single in the eighth, and Greg Dobbs hit a two-run homer in the ninth to cap the rout.

New York starter Chris Young (3-6) was mercifully pulled after yielding seven runs on seven hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings.

His counterpart, Nathan Eovaldi (3-7), survived four hits and six walks in five-plus scoreless frames to earn the victory. Ryan Webb and Chris Hatcher each hurled two innings of relief to complete to shutout.

New York lost the opener of this three-game series, 4-2, on Tuesday and has dropped nine straight at Citi Field -- the club's longest home skid since 2004.

"It's one of those games you just check off the calendar and get ready for tomorrow," Mets manager Terry Collins said.
