Cain vs. Matsuzaka in battle of phenom starters
Jun 16, 2007 - 1:03 PM San Francisco (30-36) at Boston (42-24) 3:55 pm EDTBOSTON (Ticker) - The San Francisco Giants have had trouble scoring runs this season, especially when Matt Cain starts.
The Giants will draw another tough assignment in Cain's start Saturday when they visit the Boston Red Sox and Daisuke Matsuzaka.
Cain (2-6, 3.31 ERA) has surrendered more than three runs in a start just three times this season and is holding opponents to a .224 batting average, yet has just two wins to show for his efforts. Only twice has San Francisco managed to total five runs in Cain's starts.
The 22-year-old righthander throws hard but keeps the ball out of the middle of the plate, as evidenced by the fact that he has only allowed five home runs this season.
The Giants will try to garner some support for Cain against Matsuzaka (7-5, 4.52). The 26-year-old Japanese righthander has lost his last three starts and is prone to bouts of wildness.
The Red Sox have averaged nearly six runs in games in which Matsuzaka starts, but their recent offensive funk has extended to his games as well. Boston hitters have totaled one run in Matsuzaka's last two starts combined.
The Red Sox busted out of that offensive funk in Frida's 10-2 win.
