Smoltz returns to the mound vs. Indians

CLEVELAND (Ticker) - John Smoltz has had some bumps and bruises this season, but it never seems to effect his form when he returns.

Smoltz (7-3, 2.83 ERA) will make his first start in 11 days on Saturday when the Atlanta Braves visit the Cleveland Indians.

Smoltz suffered a dislocated pinky May 14 against the Nationals and came back five days later. He ran off a string of 14 straight scoreless innings over two starts against Boston and the New York Mets following that injury.

The last time Smoltz started against Cleveland was in Game Three of the 1995 World Series. He got knocked around for four runs in 2 1/3 innings, but the Braves recovered to win the series in six games.

The Indians will counter with control artist Paul Byrd (6-2, 4.50). The veteran righthander has issued just four walks in 68 innings this season.

Byrd suffered through his worst outing of the season last Sunday when he allowed seven runs and 11 hits in four innings to take a loss against Seattle.

Atlanta rallied for a pair of runs in the ninth inning Friday en route to a 5-4 victory.
