Schmidt hopes to rebound against Angels

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) - Jason Schmidt has been up and down since signing a three-year, $47 million contract in the offseason with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

A shoulder injury that may or may not still exist robbed him of nearly two months earlier this season, and a strong comeback was derailed in his last start.

Schmidt (1-3, 6.43 ERA) will look to rebound again when he takes the mound Saturday in Game Two of the Freeway Series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Dodger Stadium.

Schmidt will have a tough test just measuring up to his rotation-mate Derek Lowe, who stymied the Angels on Friday in a 2-1 Dodgers victory.

The 34-year-old Schmidt allowed one hit in six scoreless innings in his return on June 5, but followed up that performance with a four-inning, six-run dud in a loss to the Toronto Blue Jays last Sunday.

The Angels will counter with Jered Weaver (5-3, 4.14). The second-year righthander has not suffered a loss since May 3, but a back injury forced him out of his start last Saturday after just three innings.

Weaver held the Dodgers to two runs and five hits over 6 2/3 innings on May 19, earning a win as the Angels swept a series at Angel Stadium.
