Stults goes for Padres in desert opener

Aug 24, 2012 - 2:53 PM (Sports Network) - Lefty Eric Stults can reverse the result of an early June start against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday when the San Diego Padres visit them to open a three-game series at Chase Field.

Stults, who'd been 2-0 against Arizona in his initial four appearances, dropped a 6-0 decision in June 3 after allowing three earned runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.

He's won both of his decisions since, combining to allow just a run on 10 hits in 13 innings against the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta.

The 32-year-old got a no-decision on Aug. 18 against San Francisco when he was touched for five runs on nine hits in six innings of the Giants' 8-7 win.

He's 2-1 in eight road appearances in 2012 with a 2.56 earned run average.

For Arizona, fellow lefty Patrick Corbin faces the Padres for the first time as a starter.

The 23-year-old pitched 4 1/3 innings in relief against San Diego on July 3 and gave up two runs on four hits with six strikeouts, but the Padres won, 9-5.

He's 3-0 with a save in six appearances since, while combining to allow 22 hits and nine runs in 30 innings.

In five home outings this season, he's 2-1 with a 2.36 ERA.

On Wednesday in San Diego, Carlos Quentin hit a two-run double in the first inning and Andrew Werner won his major league debut as the Padres capped a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 4-2 win.

Werner (1-0) gave up two runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts over six-plus innings.

"I felt good out there tonight after the nerves calmed down," Werner said. "It was a bit crazy, but after I got that first strike I settled down and got into my groove."

Quentin drove in three, Will Venable scored twice and Mark Kotsay drove in a run for the Padres, who have won four straight overall and 18 of their last 21 against the Pirates.

In Arizona, Wade Miley went eight strong innings and the Diamondbacks downed the Miami Marlins, 3-0, in the nightcap of a doubleheader.

Miley (14-8) scattered four hits, issued just one walk, and struck out five - including the final three batters he faced. The 25-year-old rookie tied a career-high in innings and pitches (116).

"He threw his pitches with a ton of conviction," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said.

Paul Goldschmidt went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Diamondbacks, who swept the twinbill to force a split of the four-game series.

In the opener, Tyler Skaggs picked up his first major league victory and Gerardo Parra collected two hits and scored twice en route to a 3-2 triumph.

San Diego has won five of nine games between the teams in 2012, including a three-game sweep in Phoenix from July 2-4. Arizona won the series last year, 11-7.
