Braves go for sweep of Indians
Jun 17, 2007 - 1:30 PM Atlanta (37-32) at Cleveland (39-28) 1:05 pm EDTCLEVELAND (Ticker) - The Atlanta Braves go for a three-game series sweep of the Cleveland Indians when the teams meet in interleague play on Sunday.
Braves starter Kyle Davies (3-5, 5.70 ERA) will have to pitch better than he has been if the team hopes to leave Jacobs Field with the sweep. The 23-year-old righthander is 0-2 with a 10.34 ERA in 8 2/3 innings over his last two starts.
Cleveland counters with Fausto Carmona (7-2, 3.17), who has shown the ability to pitch deep into the game. The righthander has lasted seven or more innings in eight of his 12 starts this season.
Carmona had gone 7-0 over his last 10 starts before taking a loss in his last outing on Tuesday against the Florida Marlins. He allowed three runs in seven innings, but received no run support in a 3-0 defeat.
John Smoltz pitched six effective innings for his 201st career win as the Braves posted a 6-2 win here on Saturday. Edgar Renteria had five hits, including a home run, and Willie Harris also had two RBI for Atlanta.
Casey Blake has a 25-game hitting streak for the Indians, who are 21-10 at home this season.
