Blue Jays look to keep rolling against Nationals
Jun 17, 2007 - 1:31 PM Washington (29-39) at Toronto (33-34) 1:07 pm EDTTORONTO (Ticker) - The Toronto Blue Jays will be after their fourth consecutive win and a three-game series sweep when they host the Washington Nationals in interleague action on Sunday.
With a win, the Blue Jays also would reach the .500 mark for the first time since May 1 when they were 13-13.
Josh Towers (2-4, 5.31 ERA) will take the mound for the Blue Jays in place of A.J. Burnett, who has been bothered by a sore shoulder. Towers has split time between the bullpen and the starting rotation this season, posting a 1-4 record and 5.00 ERA as a starter.
Washington starter Micah Bowie (3-2, 3.89) also has made the move from the bullpen to the starting rotation, but is having more success than Towers. Since entering the rotation on May 20, Bowie is 3-0 with a 4.01 ERA in five starts.
Shaun Marcum had a career-high 11 strikeouts and allowed just three hits in seven innings as the Blue Jays defeated the Nationals, 7-3, on Saturday.
Vernon Wells' two-run home run and Frank Thomas' two-run single highlighted a four-run third inning for the Blue Jays, who have defeated the Nationals six straight times.
Dmitri Young and Ryan Zimmerman homered for the Nationals.
