Resilient Mets win in 10

Aug 29, 2012 - 5:38 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Ike Davis hit a go-ahead RBI double during a four-run 10th inning and the New York Mets came back to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies, 9-5, in the opener of a three-game series.

Davis, who hit a walkoff homer against the Houston Astros on Sunday, drove in David Wright with a double to the left-field gap against B.J. Rosenberg (0-2).

Lucas Duda followed with an RBI single before Kelly Shoppach helped send the Mets to their third consecutive win with a towering homer into the seats in left field.

"They're gonna play it out," Mets manager Terry Collins said of his club's effort. "There's guys playing for jobs, there's guys playing for careers and there's still a lot of fight."

Bobby Parnell (4-3) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory.

Shoppach added a game-tying double in the eighth inning off of Antonio Bastardo. The shallow line drive scored Wright, who led off with a walk against Josh Lindblom, and ended a season-best 15 2/3 scoreless innings by the Philadelphia bullpen.

The Phillies, who were coming off of a three-game sweep of the National League East-leading Washington Nationals, wasted a first-inning grand slam from Ryan Howard and a homer from Chase Utley.

"(Rosenberg) is new," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel. "He hasn't been out there that much. He's got a good arm but at the same time he needs experience in the big leagues."

Chris Young got the start for the Mets and allowed five runs on four hits with three walks over 4 1/3 innings. He was removed after Utley gave the Phillies a 5-4 lead with his ninth homer of the season.

Vance Worley countered with 4 1/3 innings for the Phillies and gave up four runs on nine hits. The righty hasn't won a game since Aug. 1 and has not reached 100 pitches in any of his last seven starts.

New York opened the game with three straight singles -- by Ruben Tejada, Daniel Murphy and Wright -- for a 1-0 lead.

Howard's first-inning blast was preceded by a pair of walks and a hit batsmen. The former NL MVP then turned on a 1-2 fastball and sent it into the seats in right-center field, marking his 11th career grand slam and first of the season.

In the fourth, Duda led off with a single and two batters later Mike Baxter deposited his first homer of the year into the right-field stands, making it 4-3.

Wright's sacrifice fly in the fifth drove Worley from the game and scored Tejada, who led off with a ground-rule double and moved up on Murphy's base hit.

Game Notes

The Mets improved to 6-1 at Citizens Bank Park this season. They lead the season-series, 9-4 ... Worley threw 60 pitches. He is 0-3 over his last seven home starts.
