Blanton hopes to keep A's away from third straight loss

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Oakland Athletics will try to avoid their third straight setback when they host the Cincinnati Reds in the opener of a three-game interleague series on Monday.

Oakland gives the ball to Joe Blanton (6-4, 3.62 ERA), who is making his first career appearance against the Reds. Blanton allowed just three runs and eight hits in seven innings of a 7-3 win at Houston on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old righthander had been respectable at home this season, posting a 2-2 record with a 1.91 ERA here. In his last start here, Blanton yielded just one run in 7 1/3 frames vs. Boston on June 7.

After winning the first matchup in their three-game series against St. Louis, the A's dropped two straight, including Sunday's finale, 10-6.

The Reds counters with Kyle Lohse (3-8, 4.30) on the mound. The righthander gave up four runs and seven hits in seven frames during a 6-3 defeat to Anaheim.

Loshe is 1-2 with a 4.98 ERA in six lifetime outings against Oakland.

Cincinnati has dropped four of their last five games and nine of 15 overall this month.
