Two hot offenses get together in Show-Me State rivalry

Jun 18, 2007 - 1:39 PM Kansas City (28-42) at St. Louis (30-36) 8:10 pm EDT

ST. LOUIS (Ticker) - The St. Louis Cardinals on Monday host the Kansas City Royals in the opener of a three-game series.

The Cardinals have scored offensively, scoring the fourth-fewest runs in the majors. But they exploded for 28 runs over the weekend in winning two of three games at Oakland.

Adam Wainwright (5-5, 4.66 ERA) will look to be the latest St. Louis pitcher to benefit from the offensive surge, as he faces the same team he dominated in his last start. He permitted just one hit and two walks over eight frames to notch his first win in four starts in a 7-3 win over Kansas City on Wednesday.

In going 5-2 in their last seven games, the Royals have managed 63 runs.

Odalis Perez (3-7, 6.19) will be dueling Wainwright for the second time in less than a week. The 30-year-old was roughed up on Tuesday against the Cardinals, surrendering seven runs and 10 hits in just three innings.

The outing continued a bad trend for the lefthander, as he has had next to no luck in 10 career appearances - including seven starts - against St. Louis, as he is 2-4 with a 9.32 ERA against the Cardinals.
