Padres take down Dodgers in 11 innings
Sep 5, 2012 - 7:49 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Logan Forsythe hit a go-ahead two-run single as part of a three-run 11th inning as the San Diego Padres downed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6-3, in the middle test of a three-game set."I got a pitch in the zone and tried to go back up the box," Forsythe said of the go-ahead hit. "Anything that helps us win is exciting."
Cameron Maybin started the frame with a single off of John Ely (0-1). Everth Cabrera then reached on a bunt single to third and both runners advanced a base on Luis Cruz's throwing error to first.
Pinch-hitter Alexi Amarista then grounded out sharply to second, which kept the runners put before Will Venable was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out.
Forsythe came to the plate and lined a single to center, which brought home Maybin and Cabrera, and Headley followed with base hit to plate Forsythe for a 6-3 Padres edge.
Luke Gregerson tossed a scoreless 11th to notch his fourth save of the year, while Tommy Layne (0-1) struck out the side in the 10th to pick up the win.
Chris Denorfia smacked his third leadoff homer of the year and Yasmani Grandal tied the game in the eighth with a two-run shot for San Diego, which snapped a three-game skid.
Clayton Kershaw fanned nine and surrendered a run on five hits and three walks over seven innings for the Dodgers, who had a three-game winning streak halted. His strikeout of Jesus Guzman in the seventh was his 200th of the season, the third straight year he's accomplished the feat.
Denorfia led off the game and hammered the first pitch he saw deep into the seats in left field, but the Dodgers got the run back in the second when Andre Ethier launched a two-out solo shot into right-center field for his 1,000th career hit, which knotted the contest at 1-1.
Mark Ellis had an RBI double and Shane Victorino added a run-scoring single in the seventh, but Grandal knotted the game in the eighth when he stroked a one- out two-run shot just over the wall in right-center field, which made it 3-3.
"We're having our troubles putting up runs," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "We had a two-run lead and we weren't ready to hold it."
Game Notes
Padres starter Eric Stults allowed a run on seven hits and one walk over six innings ... San Diego was 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base, while Los Angeles finished 3-for-12 with RISP and stranded nine.
