Giants, Diamondbacks close out lengthy set

Sep 5, 2012 - 2:49 PM (Sports Network) - The first two portions of this three-game series between the San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks have exceeded nine innings.

Wednesday, one of the clubs will try to win the rubber match of the set no matter how long it takes.

Marco Scutaro's RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the National League West-leading Giants to a 9-8 win on Monday, but last night it was Arizona's turn to shine in extras. Jason Kubel put the Diamondbacks ahead with an RBI triple and Miguel Montero gave the club some breathing room with a run-scoring single for an 8-6 win in 11 innings.

"It felt great to be able to contribute and get a hit at a big time," Kubel said on the club's website. "I had a big chance earlier and missed that one, so it was nice to be able to do that."

Aaron Hill kept Arizona close the entire game with a 5-for-5 performance, a home run and three runs scored. John McDonald drove in a pair of runs and relief pitcher Josh Collmenter earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Ian Kennedy was touched for five runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings in the no-decision.

The D'backs won for the third time in 12 tries, and learned outfielder Chris Young could miss about a week or so with a right quadriceps ailment. Adam Eaton was called up from Triple-A Reno as insurance and posted two hits and a run scored last night in his debut.

"Not really my call," Young said about Eaton taking his spot for now. "The team is free to do whatever they think is right. As far as I know, we're still trying to win games and that's all we're focusing on right now. I don't really think about anything any deeper than that."

Trevor Cahill has pitched poorly enough to lose his job, going 0-2 with a 5.08 earned run average in his last six starts. Cahill will take the mound tonight and did not record a decision in a 4-3 win at Los Angeles on Friday, as he yielded three runs in 5 2/3 innings. Cahill is 9-11 with a 4.02 ERA in 27 starts this season.

Cahill, a right-hander, has lost both of his starts against San Francisco this season and owns a 3-2 mark to go along with a 2.75 ERA in six career starts in this series. Cahill hasn't tasted victory since July 30 at Dodger Stadium.

Arizona is 3-3 so far on a 10-game road trip and will visit San Diego for three games this weekend.

San Francisco had won three in a row and six of seven games before dropping last night's middle test of this set in extra frames. Brandon Belt finished 3- for-5 with a home run and two RBI, while Pablo Sandoval had two hits and two runs batted in in defeat.

Ryan Vogelsong was bailed out by the offense and put his club in a big hole after just 3 1/3 innings. He was reached for six runs and nine hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in the no-decision.

"We got down and they came back, couldn't quite finish the deal," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

The Giants still own a 4 1/2-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. The Dodgers dropped an extra-inning affair to San Diego last night and will visit San Francisco for three games this weekend.

Madison Bumgarner hopes to solve Arizona when he faces the club for the third time this season tonight. He is 0-2 in the first two starts and 3-2 with a 3.50 ERA in eight career games (7 starts).

Bumgarner has lost two straight and three of five starts overall, last toeing the rubber in a 6-4 road setback against the Chicago Cubs on Friday. The left- hander lasted just four innings and gave up five runs -- four earned -- and six hits. Bumgarner hasn't found his touch since tossing eight scoreless innings and striking out 10 in a win at Los Angeles on Aug. 20.

He has pitched well at home this season, going 8-2 in 12 starts.

Arizona is 6-5 against the Giants this season.
