Patrick Corbin (5-7) took the loss, giving up three runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings. While in the game, he received just one run of support, which came in the third inning off an RBI-groundout from Jason Kubel.
With the St. Louis Cardinals winning earlier on Sunday, the loss puts the Diamondbacks 6 1/2 games out of a wild-card spot.
Andrew Werner (2-1) got the win and posted his fourth straight quality outing. He pitched 6 1/3 solid innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out six.
"We've had trouble this year with similar pitchers like him," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said about Werner. "He had good deception and we hadn't seen him, so he was obviously tough on us."
Carlos Quentin and Chris Denorfia each hit solo homers and scored two runs apiece for the Padres, who have won four of their last five games.
The Padres scored first, bringing home two runs in the second inning. Quentin led the inning off with a double and following a walk to Jesus Guzman, Cameron Maybin ripped a double to left to score Quentin. Guzman advanced to third and scored on an Andy Parrino sacrifice fly.
Headley came to the plate in the seventh with the bases loaded after Denorfia reached on an error in between walks issued to John Baker and Logan Forsythe. Headley cleared the bases with a homer to right field and Quentin followed with a home run of his own to left to make the score 8-1.
"It's something that not a whole lot of people get to say they do that in their career, so it's a great feeling," Headley said about his grand slam, which gave him 102 RBI this season.
Anthony Bass came on to pitch the final frame for San Diego and allowed the D'Backs to manufacture a run before recording the last out.
He and gave up a base hit to Montero to start the inning then issued a walk to Chris Johnson before John McDonald moved Montero to third on a ground ball force out at second base. Gerardo Parra then grounded out, moving Montero across home plate for Arizona's second run.
