Tigers look to pushing winning streak to three games
Jun 19, 2007 - 1:02 PM Detroit (40-29) at Washington (30-40) 7:05 pm EDTWASHINGTON (Ticker) - The Detroit Tigers try to win their third consecutive game when they meet the Washington Nationals on Tuesday.
In the series opener, Marcus Thames and Carlos Guillen both homered as the Tigers won their major league-leading 22nd road game and survived a ninth-inning charge for a 9-8 triumph on Monday.
Detroit improved to 3-1 on its current nine-game interleague road trip, which concludes with a weekend series against the Atlanta Braves.
Coming off his shortest outing of the year, Chad Durbin (5-3, 4.60 ERA) takes the mound for the Tigers. He allowed two runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings of a 6-5 setback to Milwaukee.
Durbin hopes to give a impressive performance as his spot in the rotation might be coming to an end with the expected return of veteran Kenny Rogers.
Washington counters with Jason Simontacchi (4-4, 4.84), who seeks his third straight winning start. The righthander was stellar in his last outings, yielding one run in seven frames for a 3-1 win at Baltimore.
The 33-year-old Simontacchi, who is just 1-3 at RFK Stadium this season, will be making his first career appearance against the Tigers.
