Wells hopes to avoid loss No. 12 vs. Royals
Jun 19, 2007 - 1:26 PM Kansas City (29-42) at St Louis (30-37) 8:10 pm EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) - The St. Louis Cardinals have had their share of issues since winning the World Series last October, but Kip Wells' struggles have become the most glaring problem of late.
Wells (2-11, 6.93 ERA) takes the mound on Tuesday hoping to avoid his 12th loss of the season when the Cardinals visit the Kansas City Royals.
The 30-year-old righthander signed a one-year, $4 million contract with St. Louis in the offseason in part to replace World Series heroes Jeff Suppan and Jeff Weaver, who left for Milwaukee and Seattle, respectively.
Wells has struggled all season, but lately his problems have gotten worse. He lasted a season-low 1 1/3 innings last Thursday at Kansas City, yielding six earned runs and walking four batters.
The Royals have traditionally been a tough matchup for Wells, who owns a 3-3 career mark with a 10.44 ERA in seven games - six starts.
Kansas City will counter with its own struggling starter, Scott Elarton (2-2, 8.54). The 31-year-old righthander lasted just two innings last Thursday against the Cardinals, allowing six runs and five hits.
Elarton will need to find a way to slow St. Louis slugger Albert Pujols, who is 5-for-10 with three homers in his career against the righthander.
