White Sox squeak past Tigers, increase division lead

Sep 18, 2012 - 12:29 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Dewayne Wise drove in two runs as the Chicago White Sox edged the Detroit Tigers, 5-4, in a makeup of a game that was postponed last Thursday.

Dayan Viciedo and Gordon Beckham added an RBI each for the White Sox, who have won four in a row and increased their lead in the AL Central to three games over their Monday foes.

"That goes away next series if we don't show up and do what we're capable of," Beckham said about the division lead. "We just have to go out there and keep grinding."

Nate Jones (8-0) worked 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and fanning two.

Delmon Young posted two hits and three RBI for the Tigers, who have dropped two in a row after winning four straight.

"We got to beat the other teams we play. It's that simple," Tigers first baseman Prince Fielder said. "Come out, be ready to play and see what happens."

Doug Fister (9-9) worked four-plus frames in defeat, charged with eight hits and five runs -- four earned.

The deciding runs were scored with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Down 4-3 and with the bases loaded, Viciedo hit a grounder to short, which was flipped to second for the first out, but Omar Infante's throw to first was wild and low, allowing Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko to cross the plate.

Konerko fouled out to end a threat in the sixth, and Chicago was denied an insurance run in the eighth when Wise was tagged out at third when unwisely trying to advance to third on a fly from Dunn. Had Wise remained at second, Beckham would have crossed the plate easily.

Brett Myers, Matt Thornton and Addison Reed teamed up to toss a scoreless ninth, with the latter retiring Austin Jackson on a fly to right to earn his 27th save.

Detroit scored three times in the third on a two-run single from Young and an RBI hit by Jackson.

Chicago answered in the home fourth as Beckham was plunked with the bases loaded and Wise brought home two with a base hit.

The Tigers took a one-run lead in the top of the fifth when Miguel Cabrera hit a leadoff double, moved up on a Fielder single and scored on Young's hit to center.
