Sosa goes for 600 against the Cubs
Jun 19, 2007 - 1:38 PM Chicago Cubs (31-37) at Texas (26-43), 8:35 pm EDTARLINGTON, Texas (Ticker) - Sammy Sosa has a chance to make history against the club with which he had his greatest success.
Sosa aims for his 600th career homer Tuesday when the Chicago Cubs face the Texas Rangers.
Sosa was unceremoniously traded by the Cubs to the Baltimore Orioles after the 2004 season. After an unsuccessful 2005 campaign, Sosa was out of baseball for all of 2006 before the Rangers gave him another chance this season.
Most of his historic homers came as a member of Chicago, including over 60 three times in 1998, 1999 and 2001. But on Tuesday he'll have a chance to become just the fifth player in major league history get to 600 career homers and join Hank Aaron, Barry Bonds, Babe Ruth and Willie Mays.
Trying to stop Sosa will be Sean Marshall (3-2, 2.12 ERA). The 24-year-old lefthander has yet to allow more than two runs in any of his five starts this season, and has won each of his last three.
He never faced Sosa.
Countering for the Rangers will be Robinson Tejeda (5-7, 6.49). The veteran righthander is 1-4 over his last five outings with a 10.48 ERA. Opponents are batting .351 off him over that stretch.
Chicago is coming off an eight-game stretch (4-4) in which it have failed to score more than four runs in any of the games.
