The Orioles, who had a season-high six-game winning streak halted in Sunday's loss at Boston, took the first game of the twinbill by a 4-1 score. Steve Johnson tossed five shutout innings and Jim Johnson picked up his 48th save, while Adam Jones went 4-for-4 with a home run.
Ryan Flaherty also homered in the first game for the Orioles.
Baltimore dropped the nightcap, 9-5, and Wei-Yin Chen was dealt the loss for giving up five runs and nine hits in five innings. Nate McLouth went deep and Robert Andino recorded two hits and a pair of runs driven in for the O's, who still lead the American League wild card and are 1 1/2 games behind the New York Yankees for the AL East lead.
"We have to take care of ourselves," Jones said. "We're not playing the Yankees any more the rest of the season. We just have to take care of ourselves."
Joe Saunders draws the start for Baltimore on Tuesday and he is 2-2 with a 3.48 earned run average in five starts since coming over via trade from Arizona. Saunders threw eight innings of one-run ball in his last outing, a 3-1 win at Seattle. The left-hander, who was 6-10 in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks before the trade, defeated Toronto on Sept. 3 with 6 1/3 shutout innings.
Saunders has faced the Blue Jays eight times in his career, going 3-4 with a 3.38 ERA over 53 1/3 innings.
Toronto ended a seven-game losing streak with the win in the nightcap, as J.P. Arencibia hit a grand slam and Edwin Encarnacion added a two-run homer. Arencibia had five RBI and Moises Sierra went deep in the win, Toronto's third in its last 14 games.
Ricky Romero finally halted his lengthy losing streak even though he gave up four runs and eight hits in five innings. Romero hadn't won since June 22 at Miami and was 0-13 with a 7.42 earned run average in his previous 15 starts, with the Jays going 1-14 in that time.
"It feels good; it wasn't pretty from my side, but I battled out of some jams," Romero told the Jays' website.
Toronto veteran infielder Omar Vizquel went 2-for-5 with a double to tie Mel Ott for 40th on the all-time hit lists (2,876).
The Blue Jays, who are 1-7 on a 10-game road trip, will send Aaron Laffey to the mound Tuesday and he is 0-4 over his last eight appearances. Laffey hasn't prevailed since Aug. 5 at Oakland and was dealt the loss in a 10-7 setback at Yankee Stadium on Thursday. He gave up five runs -- four earned -- on two hits in three innings to fall to 3-6 with a 4.80 ERA in 20 games (14 starts).
Laffey, a left-hander, is 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA in seven career games (1 start) against Baltimore.
The Orioles are 10-6 against the Blue Jays this season. Baltimore had its six- game home-winning streak against Toronto come to an end last night.
