Brewers look to keep Giants reeling

Jun 20, 2007 - 12:52 PM San Francisco (30-40) at Milwaukee (40-31) 2:05 pm EDT

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The Milwaukee Brewers can complete a three-game series sweep of the struggling San Francisco Giants when the teams complete their interleague series on Wednesday.

The Giants are in the midst of a season-high six-game losing streak and have lost 18 of 24 games.

Claudio Vargas (5-1, 3.86 ERA) will start for the Brewers, who have won two straight and six of seven. The righthander allowed three runs in six innings during an 11-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Friday.

Prior to that, Vargas earned his first save of the season during a relief appearance against Texas Rangers on June 10.

The Giants counter with Barry Zito (6-7, 4.41), whose first season with the team has been a major disappointment thus far.

The lefthanded Zito, who signed a seven-year $126 million contract with the team in December, endured another rocky start in his last outing. He allowed seven runs in 5 1/3 innings during a 10-2 defeat to the Boston Red Sox on Friday.

It was the fourth time in 14 starts this season that he allowed six or more runs.

Prince Fielder drove in three runs as the Brewers defeated the Giants, 6-2, here on Tuesday.

Barry Bonds was 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout and remains seven home runs shy of tying Hank Aaron's all-time record of 755 home runs.
