Perez takes mound for Mets in rubber game vs. Twins
Jun 20, 2007 - 2:17 PM Minnesota (35-34) at Ny Mets (38-31) 7:10 pm EDTFLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- The struggling New York Mets will turn to Oliver Perez to win their first series in six tries on Wednesday.
Perez and the Mets aim for their fourth win in their last 16 games when they host the Minnesota Twins in the rubber game of a three-game interleague series.
Perez (7-5, 2.93 ERA) has been a pleasant surprise and will look to build on a dominant performance in which he shut out a potent New York Yankees lineup for 7 1/3 innings on Friday.
But the Mets have fallen upon hard times. Despite having won the series opener, 8-1, on Monday, the club has lost five straight series.
However, there is hope in the form of Perez, who outdueled Roger Clemens by allowing just five hits and striking out six as the Mets won, 2-0, on Friday.
The lefthander will try and help New York rebound after they committed four errors - the most since 2003 - and lost, 9-0, on Tuesday.
Scott Baker (1-2, 7.33) takes the mound for the Twins, hoping to extend New York's recent woes. However in order to do so, Baker will have to much better than his last outing in which he allowed six runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings against Milwaukee on Friday.
