Padres looking to hand Orioles 10th straight setback

Jun 20, 2007 - 2:22 PM Baltimore (29-41) at San Diego (41-28) 10:05 pm EDT

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres look to continue the Baltimore Orioles' misery on Wednesday when the teams meet in the second game of a three-game interleague series.

The Padres have won three in a row and are 28-15 since the beginning of May, while the Orioles have dropped nine straight and 14 of 16.

San Diego starter Justin Germano (5-0, 2.36 ERA) looks to continue his breakout season for San Diego, which recalled the righthander from Class AAA Portland in May.

The 24-year-old has not allowed an earned run in three of his seven starts this season, including his last outing against the Tampa Bay Devils Rays on Thursday when he allowed three hits over six scoreless innings.

San Diego closer Trevor Hoffman, who earned the 500th save of his career earlier this month, is one save away from recording his 500th save as a member of the Padres.

Like Germano, Baltimore starter Jeremy Guthrie (3-1, 2.57) has been a pleasant surprise for his team. Though he has just one win to show for it, the righthander has thrown at least seven innings in seven consecutive starts, and hasn't allowed more than three runs over that span.

Brian Giles hit a three-run home run and Khalil Greene had a career-high four hits, including a solo homer, as the Padres blasted the Orioles, 12-6, here on Tuesday.

Miguel Tejada had two hits and drove in three runs for the Orioles, who were playing their first game since firing manager Sam Perlozzo on Monday. Baltimore bullpen coach Dave Trembley is serving as manager on an interim basis.
