Surprising Tavarez, Red Sox face Braves
Jun 20, 2007 - 2:56 PM Boston (45-25) at Atlanta (38-34) 7:35 pm EDTATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Boston Red Sox expected another great performance by Josh Beckett on Tuesday. But one night later, they hope to get another unexpected contribution from Julian Tavarez.
The surprising Tavarez and the Red Sox will take on the Atlanta Braves in the rubber contest of a three-game series at Turner Field on Wednesday night.
The 27-year-old Beckett has pitched quite well against Atlanta, allowing just two earned runs over his last four starts coming into Tuesday. The righthander, who sports a miniscule 1.88 ERA over five starts here, also is one of the top pitchers in the American League.
So, when hurled six scoreless innings to lead the Red Sox to a 4-0 blanking of the Braves on Tuesday night, it was no surprise.
But on Wednesday, Boston will look to keep the stellar pitching going behind the less-heralded Tavarez (4-4, 4.97 ERA), who has been a pleasant surprise for the Red Sox this season.
A career reliever, the righthander was named Boston's fifth starter in spring training this campaign. It has worked out better than expected for Tavarez, who is 3-0 with a 3.65 ERA in his last six starts.
His last time out, the volatile righthander allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings in a 10-2 win vs. the San Francisco Giants last Friday.
He will be opposed by Buddy Carlyle (1-1, 4.44), who will be looking for some more run support this time out. The righthander has not gotten more than three runs of support in his five starts this season.
Carlyle yielded three runs - two earned - and six hits in six frames in a 5-4 win at Cleveland Friday.
