Hernandez looks to help Mariners start new winning streak
Jun 21, 2007 - 1:01 PM Pittsburgh (31-40) at Seattle (36-32) 10:05 pm EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) - The Seattle Mariners have hit a rough patch. Felix Hernandez has had a rough go of it lately as well.
Hernandez (3-4, 4.58 ERA) takes the mound as the Seattle Mariners look to take the rubber game of a three-game series from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday.
Seattle had won its previous five contests before dropping six straight. That streak came to an end as the embattled Jeff Weaver threw a four-hitter in Wednesday's 7-0 triumph.
Hernandez will now try and start a new streak. Usually, a team can depend on their ace to help them get rolling. However, Hernandez has not proven to be reliable over his last three starts.
The 21-year-old phenom has yielded 11 runs and 30 hits in his last 17 2/3 frames, and has not won since he beat Kansas City on May 25 - a game in which he left with tightness in his back. In his last outing he surrendered four runs and 12 hits in six innings in a loss to Houston on Friday.
Hernandez will be opposed by Jon Van Benschoten (0-1, 3.18). Van Benschoten was called up from Class AAA Indianapolis of the International League on June 15. The Pirates' first round pick in 2001, Van Benschoten made his first start of the season on Saturday yielding two runs and three hits in 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Chicago White Sox.
