Struggling Mets welcome A's

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - The New York Mets have been the worst team in the major leagues this month. That being said, they're still in first place.

The Mets will try to maintain their slim lead in the National League East when they host the Oakland Athletics on Friday for the beginning of their final interleague series of the season.

The Mets are just 4-14 this month, but still own a 1 1/2-game lead over the Atlanta Braves (38-35) in the division.

In a microcosm of New York's struggles, ace Tom Glavine has been stuck at 295 career wins since May 19, going 0-4 over his last four starts.

Glavine (5-5, 4.67 ERA) has gotten pounded in each of his last two starts, allowing 16 runs and 19 hits over 8 1/3 combined innings against the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees. He has walked five and struck out just two batters over that span.

New York's offense has been surprisingly anemic as well, failing to eclipse three runs in 13 contests this month.

Taking the mound for the A's will be lefthander Lenny DiNardo (2-3, 2.21). The converted reliever suffered his first setback as a starter last Saturday, yielding five runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings to take a loss against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Prior to last Saturday, DiNardo had allowed just one earned run in four starts.
