Griffey returns to Seattle
Jun 22, 2007 - 12:36 PM Cincinnati (28-45) at Seattle (37-32) 10:05 pm EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) - Ken Griffey Jr. is without question the greatest player in the history of the Seattle Mariners' franchise. On Friday, he will return to the city that made him famous with the Cincinnati Reds.
The Mariners made Griffey the No. 1 overall draft pick in the 1987 draft and called him up to the big club in 1989 at the age of 19.
Griffey made 10 All-Star teams with Seattle, clubbed 398 homers, won 10 Gold Gloves, seven Silver Slugger awards, led the American League in home runs three times and won the 1997 MVP award.
In 1999, Griffey was named the player of the decade by Major League Baseball. However, when management began to change and the Safeco field opened, Griffey began clamoring for change and was shipped to Cincinnati in February 2000.
Injuries have marred his career with the Reds, but he still enters Friday's game one homer shy of tying Mark McGwire for seventh place on the all-time list at 583.
Trying to prevent the historic blast for Seattle will be rookie Ryan Feierabend (1-1, 4.50 ERA). The 21-year-old lefthander has made two starts and a bullpen appearance this season, picking up his first major league win June 3 against Texas.
Cincinnati will counter with Aaron Harang (7-2, 3.88). The veteran righthander picked up a win in his last start, allowing three runs in 5 2/3 innings against the Rangers.
