Rogers makes season debut vs. Braves

ATLANTA (Ticker) - Kenny Rogers makes his first start of the season Friday as the Detroit Tigers visit the Atlanta Braves.

Rogers (NR) went 17-8 with a 3.84 ERA last season. He won all three of his postseason starts without allowing a run as the Tigers reached the World Series for the first time since 1984.

After pitching well this spring, Rogers landed on the disabled list with a blood clot in his left shoulder.

Fellow 40-year-old starter John Smoltz (8-3, 2.84 ERA), who has been dealing with lingering shoulder soreness, gets the start for the Braves. He is trying to become the fourth National League pitcher to record nine wins.

In a 6-2 win over the Indians on Saturday, Smoltz gave up two runs and struck out seven over six frames.

Smoltz has only made three appearances against the Tigers - one start - and owns a 0-1 record with a 13.50 ERA and two saves.

While the pitching in this contest should be solid, the offenses come in at opposite ends of the spectrum. The Braves were shut out in each of their last two contests whereas the Tigers have scored 39 times during their four-game winning streak.
