Carmona goes for win No. 9 at Nationals

Jun 22, 2007 - 12:59 PM Cleveland (42-29) at Washington (30-42) 7:05 pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Ticker) - Going into the season, the Cleveland Indians figured they were set at starting pitching with C.C. Sabathia headlining a group that included solid veterans and a standout rookie form last season in Jeremy Sowers.

When injuries and ineffectiveness cut that rotation down, Fausto Carmona stepped up and claimed a seat at the table. Carmona will start on Friday when the Indians open up a series at the Washington Nationals.

The 23-year-old righthander failed as a closer last season, and expected to spend most of his time this season in the minors, but instead has become the team's No. 2 starter behind Sabathia.

Carmona (8-2, 3.12 ERA) has allowed more than three earned runs in a start just twice this season. He has improved his strikeout rate over his last four outings - averaging seven per nine innings, up from 3.3 over his first nine starts - and has issued just 20 walks in 89 2/3 innings this season.

Carmona will have an offense behind him that ranks second in the majors in runs scored and crossed the plate 26 times while taking two of three games from the Philadelphia Phillies earlier in the week.

Micah Bowie (4-2, 3.78) will be charged with keeping that offense in check for the Nationals. Bowie has yet to suffer a defeat since being moved into the rotation on May 20, going 4-0 in six starts.

Washington has dropped five of its last six games.
