Cubs look for continued success vs. White Sox
Jun 23, 2007 - 1:32 PM Chicago Cubs (33-39) at Chi White Sox (29-40) 1:05 pm EDTCHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Cubs look to continue their success against the struggling Chicago White Sox when the teams face off in the middle contest of a three-game interleague set on Saturday afternoon.
In Friday's opener, Carlos Zambrano pitched eight outstanding innings and the Cubs blasted a pair of homers in the first inning en route to a 5-1 victory over the White Sox.
It was another stellar performance in the "Windy City" rivalry for the Cubs, who have won three of the four games between the clubs this season. The Cubs took two of three at Wrigley Field from May 18-20.
They will look for another victory behind Rich Hill (5-5, 3.22 ERA), who had one of his worst outings of the season his last time out. The lefthander allowed five runs and five hits - including three homers - in three innings in an 11-3 loss vs. the San Diego Padres on Sunday.
He will be opposed by Javier Vazquez (3-5, 4.39), who has not won since June 1. In his last outing, the righthander yielded five runs and seven hits in six frames, while walking one and striking out eight in an 8-7 loss at the Pittsburgh Pirates last Sunday.
Just two years removed from a World Series title, the White Sox continue their tailspin in 2007. They have lost 20 of their last 25 games to fall 11 games under .500 for the first time since May 29, 2001.
The White Sox already have losing streaks of four and five games this month and are hoping to avoid another four-game skid on Saturday.
