Red-hot Verlander takes mound against Braves

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Justin Verlander will start against a struggling Atlanta Braves' offense.

Verlander will look to continue his recent success as the Detroit Tigers square off against the Braves in second of a three-game interleague series on Saturday.

Verlander (8-2, 2.90 ERA) pitched six innings and yielded three runs and seven hits with six strikeouts in a 7-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.

The 24-year-old righthander has posted a 3-0 record with 1.23 ERA and 24 strikeouts over 22 innings in his last three starts.

He will be opposed by Kyle Davies (3-6, 5.65), who has struggled recently, posting an 0-3 record with an 8.36 ERA over his previous three starts.

The 23-year-old Davies surrendered three runs and six hits with three walks and three strikeouts in a 5-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians.

Atlanta has struggled offensively, not scoring a run in the last three games for the first time since April 20-22, 1988.

Braves outfielder Andruw Jones is hitless in his last 21 at bats, lowering his batting average to a dismal .199.
