Hamels takes mound in search of 10th win

ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Cole Hamels and Kip Wells could not be more different.

Hamels takes the mound looking for his National League-leading 10th win when the Philadelphia Phillies wrap of their three-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.

Philadelphia has won eight of Hamels' last 10 starts and the 24-year-old lefthander is second in the NL with 108 strikeouts. However, Hamels (9-3, 3.82 ERA) will be looking to rebound from his worst start of the season as he was lit up by Cleveland for six runs and eight hits in five innings on Monday.

That type of stat line has become the norm for Wells (3-11, 6.75), who leads the majors in losses and was demoted to the bullpen for a short while.

The righthander last pitched two innings in relief on Wednesday, picking up the win in a 7-6 extra-inning victory over Kansas City.

In his last start, Well was roughed up for six runs and three hits in 1 1/3 innings by Kansas City on June 14.

However, there is a silver lining for Wells. He is 5-0 with a 1.26 ERA against the Phillies, but has not faced them since 2005 when he was with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
