Peavy, Beckett face off in series finale
Jun 24, 2007 - 3:22 PM Boston (47-26) at San Diego (42-31) 4:05 pm EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Jake Peavy and Josh Beckett will look to stage a classic pitchers duel when the San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox meet in the series finale on Sunday.
Peavy (9-1, 1.98 ERA) takes the mound after allowing three runs and six hits with seven strikeouts in six innings for his sixth consecutive win in Tuesday's 12-6 victory over Baltimore.
The hard-throwing righthander tries to become the fourth pitcher in the majors with double figures wins. Peavy is tied with Philadelphia's Cole Hamels and Los Angeles' Brad Penny for the most wins in the National League.
On the other hand, Boston's Beckett (10-1, 3.14) hopes to become the first 11-game winner. In his last start, Beckett tossed six scoreless frames for a 4-0 triumph at Atlanta.
The 6-5 righthander has been tough to figure out in five career starts against the Padres, posting a respectable 4-1 record with a 2.14 ERA.
Chris Young cruised through seven frames and Khalil Greene homered twice to help San Diego even the series at one game apiece with a 6-1 victory on Saturday.
