Red Sox look to continue road success
Jun 25, 2007 - 1:01 PM Boston (48-26) at Seattle (39-33) 10:05 pm EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) - Coming off a successful interleague slate, the Boston Red Sox travel to the Safeco Field to face the Seattle Mariners in the first game of a three-game set on Monday.
The Red Sox, who posted a 12-6 record against the National League, look to go 23 games over .500 for the first time this season. Boston has 27 road wins, two behind the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for the major league lead.
Julian Tavarez (5-4, 4.50 ERA) starts for the Red Sox. The righthander has won his last two starts, allowing just two runs over 14 innings. He is seeking to put together three straight wins for the first time since the 2001 season.
On Wednesday, Tavarez yielded three hits over seven innings, striking out four in an 11-0 win at Atlanta. He is 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA in 18 lifetime relief appearances against the Mariners, although this will be his first start against the team.
With a 4-2 record on a nine-game homestand, the Mariners send Jeff Weaver (1-6. 8.56) to the mound. A major disappointment since signing as a free agent, Weaver is coming off his best outing of the season, a four-hitter in a 7-0 win over Pittsburgh on Thursday.
Weaver will be sorry to see the interleague games end as he finished 1-0 with a 1.89 ERA in three interleague starts, compared to 0-6 and 14.32 in six starts against the American League.
The righthander is 3-5 with a 6.99 ERA in 12 lifetime starts and two relief appearances against Boston, including a two-inning disastrous outing on April 10 at Boston, in which he surrendered seven runs and seven hits at in a 14-3 loss.
