Pettitte, Yankees look to stop slide

BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- Andy Pettitte takes the mound Tuesday as the New York Yankees hope to avoid a three-game skid when they face the Baltimore Orioles in the opener of a three-game series.

Pettitte (4-5, 3.28 ERA) yielded a season-high six runs and nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings in a 6-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old lefthander is 1-1 with a 5.33 ERA in four starts this month and has seen his ERA balloon from 2.51 since the beginning of June.

The Orioles counter with Jeremy Guthrie (4-1, 2.42), who has not lost since April 24.

Guthrie pitched eight innings, surrendering just one run and four hits with nine strikeouts in a 7-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Guthrie has posted a 3-0 record with a 1.63 ERA in nine starts since being moved into the rotation on May 8.

Both teams enter the game struggling. The Yankees have lost five of their last six contests and the Orioles have lost 11 of their last 14.
