Devil Rays struggling ace to face league's worst offense

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- With the way James Shields has been pitching lately, there's only one team he wants to see - the Chicago White Sox.

Shields will get that matchup on Tuesday when the Tampa Bay Devil Rays host the White Sox at Tropicana Field.

Chicago owns the worst team batting average in the major leagues at .234 and has dropped 20 of its last 26 contests.

Shields (6-2, 3.64 ERA) lasted the first two months of the season before absorbing his first loss on June 15, the first of two in a row. The 25-year-old righthander has allowed 11 earned runs in his last two starts - equalling the total from his four previous outings.

Shields faced the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field on May 25, allowing four runs and 10 hits in seven innings. He took a no decision in that start, but Chicago ended up with a 5-4 victory.

Jon Garland (4-5, 3.51) will be trying to get a win for Chicago. The 27-year-old righthander has a sub-.500 record this season due mainly to his team's offensive struggles.

Garland has yielded three earned runs or less in nine of his 14 starts this year. He is 4-1 with a 3.71 ERA in eight career starts against Tampa Bay.

The White Sox earned a rare victory on Monday, 5-4.
